'Supernatural' Spinoff 'The Winchesters' & 'Kung Fu' Canceled at The CW
The CW has recently decided to cancel two of its original scripted series, The Winchesters and Kung Fu, as the network continues to make programming changes. This comes after the cancellation of another prequel series, Walker: Independence. The CW stated, "As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity, and dedication.
" The Winchesters premiered this season and serves as a prequel to the popular Supernatural series. It follows the story of Sam and Dean's parents, John and Mary, and reveals how they came together to save the world. Jensen Ackles, who played Dean in Supernatural, also reprised his role and acted as the narrator in The Winchesters. Kung Fu, on the other hand, just completed its third season on the network.
This cancellation proves that long-running shows are not necessarily safe from the network's changes. However, there is some reassurance for fans with the renewal of Walker, which stars Jared Padalecki. Despite this, the number of scripted options on The CW is dwindling. The fate of All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois, and Gotham Knights is still uncertain. The CW recently underwent changes after being acquired by Nexstar, leading to a shift away from scripted content. The focus is now on low-cost unscripted programming, foreign titles, and live sports like LIV Golf. As a result, some local stations have even decided to drop The CW from their lineups. It remains to be seen how the other shows on The CW will fare in light of these changes.
