Supernatural: Bloodlines was a potential spin-off of the hit TV show Supernatural that was set in Chicago and introduced new characters. However, the backdoor pilot received poor reviews and ratings, possibly due to the absence of main characters Sam and Dean and the different tone compared to the original series. As a result, The CW decided not to pick up the spin-off, and the issue of the monster problem in Chicago was never addressed in the original show.
This was not the first time Supernatural had faced challenges with spin-offs, as another potential spin-off called Wayward Sisters was also canceled. There were discussions for years about expanding the Supernatural universe. The show had previously featured the Ghostfacers in a single-season web series and released Supernatural: The Anime Series. By its ninth season, The CW was eager for more Supernatural content, especially after the success of The Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals.
This led to the premiere of "Bloodlines" as a backdoor pilot at the end of Season 9, setting the stage for a larger story. "Bloodlines" takes place in Chicago and follows Ennis Ross, a young aspiring cop who witnesses his almost-fiancée being killed by a monster.
