Matthew Perry has revealed that his former Friends co-stars may not have any interest in reading his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. In the book, the 53-year-old actor opens up about his battle with substance abuse while he was playing the role of Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom. Speaking in an interview with GQ, Perry acknowledged that his deeply personal and sometimes harrowing story may not resonate with his former colleagues.
Addicts are going to care about this, and fans of Friends are going to care about this. But the cast is not going to really care about this." Perry did mention that there was one exception, with Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe on the show, reading the book and even writing the introduction.
In a preview of his interview with Diane Sawyer, Perry revealed that Jennifer Aniston was the first cast member to confront him about his addiction. Sawyer mentioned the moment when Aniston approached Perry, saying, "Jennifer, she says, 'We know you're drinking.'" Perry admitted that it was a scary moment but also acknowledged that Aniston had been the one to reach out to him the most during his struggle with addiction.
Perry's memoir sheds light on the challenges he faced during his rise to fame, starting from his early twenties when he desperately sought fame in the belief that it would solve all his problems. The book offers an intimate glimpse into his personal journey and the support he received from his Friends castmates. Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing will be available for purchase on Tuesday.
