After the Akrida Queen was defeated, Dean explained that he started exploring the multiverse after his death. These versions of Mary and John aren't the same people Dean grew up with, and they're free to write their destinies. In an interview with , Thompson revealed that making the prequel occur in another universe sets the stage for more "Supernatural" projects. Apparently, Dean and Sam's (Jared Padalecki) return is just a matter of time.

"We did not want to do anything that would upend past, present, and most importantly, future 'Supernatural.' At first, that sounds very limiting, but it was actually very freeing. I was looking through my old notes, and it was very clear just from even an initial conversation that there were a whole lot of different ways to get into this," Thompson told the outlet, explaining that the multiverse track allows "The Winchesters" to explore new storylines while keeping the "Supernatural" universe intact. "So whenever the boys, and I fully believe they'll put the boots on again — it's a question of when not if — they both can step into those shoes and not be encumbered by anything."

For now, viewers will have to wait and see what's next for "The Winchesters." With infinite versions of these characters in the mix, anything could happen.
