The main draw of "The Winchesters" is that it allows "Supernatural" fans to dive back into that world. As John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) grow closer, it's getting easier to see the traits they imparted to their sons. Viewers get to watch John and Mary form a makeshift monster-hunting family with Latika (Nida Khurshid), Carlos (Jojo Fleites), Ada (Demetria McKinney), and Millie (Bianca Kajlich), and the final episode of the season highlights these connections.
, and she wasn't kidding around. , and those instincts definitely paid off. After hinting at his presence all season long, Jensen Ackles reprised his role as Dean Winchester in the finale. There were also brief appearances from Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) and Jack Kline (Alexander Calvert). These cameos presented an opportunity to make touching callbacks to the parent series, though their appearance was more than just a ratings grab.
The Season 1 finale blew the door wide open for storytelling potential, something that "The Winchesters" executive producer Robbie Thompson did on purpose.
"We did not want to do anything that would upend past, present, and most importantly, future 'Supernatural.' At first, that sounds very limiting, but it was actually very freeing. I was looking through my old notes, and it was very clear just from even an initial conversation that there were a whole lot of different ways to get into this," Thompson told the outlet, explaining that the multiverse track allows "The Winchesters" to explore new storylines while keeping the "Supernatural" universe intact. "So whenever the boys, and I fully believe they'll put the boots on again — it's a question of when not if — they both can step into those shoes and not be encumbered by anything."
For now, viewers will have to wait and see what's next for "The Winchesters." With infinite versions of these characters in the mix, anything could happen.
