On August 12, 2016, a joint statement by ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios confirmed that Thomas Gibson would be permanently leaving his post on the police procedural drama series .
“Thomas Gibson has been ,” the statement read. “Creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date.” The actor responded with a statement of his own, expressing his disappointment at the decision.
“I love and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years,” he said. “I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.”
Prior to the permanent termination, Gibson had been suspended from the show after he got involved in a physical altercation with writer-producer Virgil Williams.
Gibson played the character Aaron Hotchner (popularly known as Hotch) on for a total of 256 episodes between 2005 and 2016. It could be argued that he was at the top of his game when he was sent packing from the show, and his career has not been the same since.
