The executive producer and star of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles, has confirmed on Twitter that the spinoff series, The Winchesters, has come to an end, at least for now. Ackles cited the ongoing strike by the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) as one of the factors contributing to the show's cancellation. Ackles tweeted, "As they say…timing is everything. With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that's some unfortunate timing.
The Winchesters premiered on The CW in October 2022 and ran for a 13-episode first season before concluding in March 2023. Although the spinoff takes place in the past, it also serves as a continuation of Supernatural by reintroducing familiar characters from after the original show's series finale. Some of the returning characters include Dean, Bobby Singer, and Jack Kline. Ackles revealed that showrunner Robbie Thompson had already mapped out a five-season plan for The Winchesters, and discussions about a second season were in progress.
He shared, "We were talking not only about story and where we wanted to take our cast, we were talking about who we were going to bring back from [Supernatural]. We were putting together a lot of tricks to keep up our sleeve and keep it exciting, not just for the new fans but for the returning fans as well." It is currently unknown which Supernatural cast members would have returned for The Winchesters Season 2 or future seasons, had the show been renewed. Two regular cast members, Padalecki and Misha Collins, did not appear in the spinoff's first season.
Collins mentioned that he had been approached about reprising his role as Castiel, but it didn't work out for various reasons. While all seasons of Supernatural can be streamed on Netflix, The Winchesters Season 1 is currently available on Max. Source: Deadline
