Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV show Friends, had the potential to make a successful transition to the big screen. Many other TV actors, such as George Clooney, Bruce Willis, and Will Smith, managed to make the leap and find success in movies. So, why didn't Perry join their ranks? In reality, Perry did try his hand at movies. He starred in indie films, worked on TV dramas written by Aaron Sorkin, and even wrote a successful stage play for London's West End and Broadway.
However, he wasn't able to replicate his TV success in the cinema. His addiction issues may have played a part in his struggles. While in an alternate universe, Perry might have overcome these issues or not had them at all, they were a part of his personality and made insuring him for big studio projects difficult. Nevertheless, Robert Downey Jr, who also battled addiction, managed to become a major superhero name in Hollywood.
If luck had been on Perry's side, he could have enjoyed a career similar to Jesse Eisenberg, playing iconic roles and writing witty stories. However, television fame can be addicting, offering international recognition, a regular paycheck, and unrivaled success in your 20s.
