Bryan DeLorenzo, the first assistant camera operator for The Winchesters, has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Television, The CW Network, and producer Jensen Ackles, alleging negligence that resulted in him being struck by lightning and hospitalized. DeLorenzo claims that director John Showalter disregarded safety protocols during a shoot in Louisiana last year. According to DeLorenzo's lawsuit, the studio's safety protocols dictate that production should halt when lightning strikes within six miles of the set.
DeLorenzo alleges that Showalter ignored this policy and chose to continue shooting despite concerns about heavy rain and lightning. DeLorenzo had expressed his reservations about continuing to shoot in such adverse weather conditions. Just ten minutes after the conversation with Showalter, DeLorenzo was standing next to a camera when a loud boom was heard.
Upon regaining consciousness, DeLorenzo felt a burning sensation in his chest and described feeling as if an explosion had occurred. DeLorenzo was immediately rushed to the emergency room for medical treatment.
He is seeking punitive damages to not only compensate for his suffering but also to discourage similar conduct in the future. The Winchesters was a prequel series to the popular Supernatural, which aired for 15 years from 2005 to 2020. It starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Unfortunately, The Winchesters was canceled after just one season in May. As for DeLorenzo, he hopes that his lawsuit will shed light on the importance of safety in the entertainment industry and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
