Lisa Kudrow ‘Had No Idea How Many Times’ Matthew Perry ‘Almost Didn’t Make It’
Lisa Kudrow, who starred alongside Matthew Perry on the hit sitcom Friends, has shared her thoughts on his untimely death. Perry, who rose to fame playing Chandler Bing on Friends, passed away on October 28, 2023, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 54. According to sources close to Kudrow, the news of Perry's death was difficult for the entire cast of Friends to comprehend. "Although no one wants to believe it was medication – prescribed or not – of course that is a thought in their minds," the source revealed.
"They are thinking he must have taken something that did not mix with the warm water." Director James Burrows, who worked closely with Perry on Friends, shared that he texted the girls from the show to inform them of their dear friend's passing.
"They were destroyed. It’s a brother dying," he stated. In Perry's memoir, which was released a year before his death, Kudrow wrote the foreword and expressed her love and concern for him.
She explained that she had always been asked about his well-being by fans but felt it wasn't her place to share his story. "I couldn’t say what I wanted to say: ‘It's his story to tell, and I'm not authorized to tell it really, am I?!'" Kudrow wrote. She also shared her moments of questioning whether she should have done more to help Perry with his struggles with addiction, but recognized that his sobriety was ultimately his own responsibility.
Kudrow concluded the foreword with a message of love and support: "He has survived impossible odds, but I had no idea how many times he almost didn’t make it. … I'm glad you're here, Matty. Good for you. I love you." Despite initial reports stating that Kudrow would be adopting Perry's dog, it was clarified that Perry did not have a dog at the time of his death. Perry had previously shared a dog named Alfred with his ex-girlfriend Molly Hurwitz.
