‘Friends’ Writer Patty Lin Says 1 Tiny Gesture From David Schwimmer Was Her ‘High Point’ on the Show
TV writer Patty Lin, who was a part of the Friends writing team during season 7, shared a fond memory of actor David Schwimmer in her new memoir, End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood. Lin recalled a time when she was working as an extra on set during the filming of season 7's "The One With All the Candy" in 2000.
Schwimmer, who was directing the episode, approached Lin and asked her to move closer to the door.
Lin was thrilled that Schwimmer addressed her by name, as it made her feel seen and valued. Lin explained that despite being familiar with the actors from table reads and shooting schedules, it was Schwimmer's kind gesture that stood out to her the most.
She emphasized that it takes very little for a celebrity to come across as a decent person, and that moment with Schwimmer was the highlight of her Friends experience.
Before Lin's extra role on the episode, she had already gained approval for one of her jokes. Lin revealed that the Friends joke huddle, where the writers discussed and finalized jokes, was the most stressful part of her job. As a drama writer by trade, the comedy aspect of writing for Friends was challenging for her. However, during the filming of "The One With the Candy," Lin impressed Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman with a one-liner.
In the episode, Chandler asks Monica why she made candy for the whole apartment, to which she responds, "We can learn their names and get to know our neighbors." Lin pitched a different response for Chandler when his initial reaction didn't generate enough laughter.
She suggested Chandler say, "Wouldn't it be easier if we just moved?" Kauffman responded with a hearty laugh, which meant a lot to Lin in that moment.
