"I am Mattman," were the last words said by Matthew Perry, which he shared in a mysterious Instagram post on October 22. Accompanying the post was a photo of Perry relaxing in his hot tub, with the lights of the Pacific Palisades in the background. Just six days later, Perry was found unresponsive in the same hot tub and sadly declared dead at the age of 54.
The enigma surrounding "Mattman," which Perry referred to as his "Rosebud," only continued to deepen.
People speculated if it was some sort of code or inside joke, and even TikTok conspiracy theorists questioned if it was a cry for help. However, the truth was that Perry had a deep fascination with Batman. In 2017, Perry purchased a 10,000-square-foot "mansion in the sky" for $20 million, complete with a "bat cave" to house his extensive collection of Batman memorabilia.
This purchase became the highest-grossing condo sale of that year.
Perry admitted that he bought the property because he wanted to live out his fantasies of being Bruce Wayne. Rihanna later bought the property in April. Perry's addiction memoir, titled "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," featured a final chapter dedicated to Batman, which revealed his obsession with the superhero. And "Mattman" or "Matman," as Perry spelled it in the memoir, was part of his grand comeback plan.
Perry's dedication to the Mattman concept was evident when, in November 2020, he approached filmmaker Adam McKay on the set of "Don't Look Up" about producing the project.
This opportunity to appear in a prestigious movie alongside stars like Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jonah Hill was a dream come true for Perry considering his struggle with opioid abuse and a near-death experience due to a burst colon.
