According to creator David Crane, making Joey and Phoebe a couple would have been too predictable and would have disrupted the dynamic of the main characters. Friends, known for its surprising twists and turns, also deviated from initial plans when it came to the romance between Chandler and Monica. Originally intended as a short-term plot twist, the positive audience response led to their relationship becoming a beloved and long-lasting aspect of the series.
