How Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki Prepared The Winchesters’ New Stars
The CW's Supernatural spin-off, which will premiere on October 11th, will follow the original monster hunters, John and Mary Winchester, as they embark on the family tradition of "saving people, hunting things." Unlike their future sons, Sam and Dean Winchester, the Winchesters will begin their journey with a larger group of hunters, as they meet Carlos and Latika along the way.
The showrunner, Robbie Thompson, explained that while The Winchesters will embody a lot of what Supernatural did, it will also bring something new to the table.
Supernatural started as a two-person show and expanded its family with characters like Castiel and Bobby, but The Winchesters will start with a larger family right from the beginning. In terms of storytelling, the spin-off will take inspiration from the early seasons of Supernatural when the hunters faced "monsters of the week" alongside a overarching "big bad" for the whole season.
Nevertheless, Thompson acknowledged that they cannot recreate Supernatural and instead aim to explore new corners of its universe.
To ensure a smooth transition for the new leads, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who will also be executive producing and narrating the spin-off, have welcomed Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly into the Supernatural family by having welcoming dinners with them.
Ackles expressed the weight of the task they are undertaking, stating that they are representing a 15-year-old intense storytelling legacy.
He jokingly added, "I didn't work my ass off for 15 years to have you kids come in here and f--k it up," emphasizing the need to respect and protect the story. The Winchesters will premiere on October 11th on The CW. Fans of Supernatural can look forward to seeing familiar elements and themes within the spin-off while exploring new aspects of the Supernatural universe. With an expanded family of hunters and a similar storytelling style to the early seasons of Supernatural, The Winchesters are poised to captivate audiences and continue the legacy of the Winchester name.
