Shemar Moore left Criminal Minds during Season 11 because he felt it was time to move on. The character he portrayed, Derek Morgan, had been a part of the show since its first episode and had become a fan favorite. However, Moore believed that he had explored every facet of Morgan's character and wanted to pursue other projects.
Filming a network show like Criminal Minds was a ten-month commitment each season, leaving little time for other movies or shows, as well as his personal life.
Despite his departure, Moore did return for a few episodes in later seasons. Since leaving Criminal Minds, Moore has taken on other law enforcement acting roles. He currently stars in the CBS action series S.W.A.T. as Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson.
He has also done voice acting for animated movies and landed movie roles, including in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Additionally, Moore returned to the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, reprising his role as Malcolm Winters for its 50th anniversary. Although Moore left the regular cast of Criminal Minds in Season 11, he made multiple cameo appearances in later seasons.
