The CW has officially cancelled The Winchesters, a prequel series set in the Supernatural universe. This decision effectively ends the Supernatural universe in its current incarnation. The series had been on the bubble for renewal since its first season finale aired in March 2023, as The CW has been cancelling many shows on their current slate. However, The Winchesters is reportedly being shopped to find a new outlet.
The only remaining CW shows on the bubble are Superman & Lois, All American: Homecoming, and Gotham Knights. The cancellation of The Winchesters may spell bad news for the future of the franchise, but it wasn't necessarily due to low ratings. The show was the third-highest-rated scripted program on The CW as of December 2022.
There have been no further comments from the producers, stars, and creators regarding the cancellation. Another CW series, Walker: Independence, also produced by Jared Padalecki, is currently looking for a new home. If The Winchesters doesn't find a new outlet, the chances of another spinoff in the Supernatural universe being produced anytime soon seem slim, considering the main cast's commitments to other shows.
