Dean Suffers Flashbacks

Following an opening scene in which a woman in Milton, Illinois bludgeons her husband to death for critiquing her dinner choices, the episode catches up with the Winchester brothers in the aftermath of their fight to secure the First Blade in the previous episode "Blade Runners".

Dean Winchester (Ackles) is suffering from a bout of insomnia and uses his time to conduct research for their hunt for Abaddon. Sam (Padalecki) attempts to rouse his brother by informing him of the case in Milton, but the elder Winchester is standoffish. Dean is clearly still affected by his having used the First Blade, and he is tormented by visual flashes.

Sam accuses Dean of being too obsessed with the Abaddon case, but Dean merely insists that his research is part of their job and that his obsession is him doing what he is supposed to do.

Nevertheless, Sam leaves to investigate the occurrence in Milton but does so without the assistance of his older brother. After Sam leaves, Dean takes to the bottle to ease his pain, but he still can't escape the effects of the Mark of Cain and how it corresponds with the First Blade. Besides being one of the , "Mother's Little Helper" also has a fair amount of character development.

Sam Investigates Violence In Milton

Eager to see what's going on in Milton, Sam arrives at the police station where the murderous housewife is being held, only to discover that she had killed herself in her cell. Perturbed by the development, Sam goes to a diner where he encounters a young hitchhiker.
