A Supernatural episode from Season 3 may hold the answer to a plot hole in the Season 15 finale. Throughout the series, Sam and Dean Winchester have always made efforts to bring each other back to life. This tradition began when their father, John Winchester, traded his soul for Dean's in the Season 2 episode "In My Time of Dying." From that point on, Dean continued this trend after Sam's death in the Season 2 episode "All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 1.
" However, there was one instance where Dean respected Sam's wishes and allowed him to live a normal life with Lisa, as they believed trapping Lucifer in the cage would eliminate the risk of his return.
But Castiel, the angel who was not swayed by Sam's wishes, resurrected one of the brothers. This demonstrates that there have been exceptions to the rule where the brothers ignored each other's desires.
In the Season 4 premiere episode of Supernatural, titled "Lazarus Rising," Castiel once again brought Dean back from the dead.
Hence, it can be concluded that the Winchester brothers did not always disregard each other's wishes. However, in the series finale, when Dean dies, Sam does not attempt to bring him back, which seems out of character for the brothers. Nevertheless, this decision can be explained by an episode from Season 3 called "Mystery Spot.
" In this episode, Sam witnesses Dean's death repeatedly as the Trickster, who is revealed to be the archangel Gabriel, teaches Sam a lesson. The lesson is that no matter what Sam does, he cannot prevent his brother's death. Sam learns that this is an inevitable consequence of their dangerous job.
Even if it did not occur during this particular hunt, it would have transpired at some point, considering the number of times the brothers have died and Dean's frequent deaths in the series.
