The Leviathan season is probably one of the least-liked entries, and these creatures' possession of Castiel directly instigates the season's events. After opening the gates to Purgatory, one of the , he proclaims himself as the new God and ruthlessly kills any angels who oppose his leadership.
Unaware of the Leviathans possessing him, this leadership style continues until the creatures take over and attack Bobby (Jim Beaver), Sam (Jared Padalecki), and Dean.
Godstiel's power trip and prioritization for ruling over protecting his fellow angels unconditionally is probably what makes him one of the less appealing iterations of Castiel. While it's through the influence of the Leviathans and perfectly foreshadows their disregard for human life, it's one of the major times Castiel hides his plans from the Winchesters, leading to catastrophe.
Although Castiel comes to realize he is possessed and will explode, his solution to avoid any fallout is to enter a lake, ultimately ensuring a direct line for Leviathans to possess others after the explosion.
