'Supernatural: Bloodlines' Spin-off Pilot Review: Let's Be Honest Here!
Let's get straight to the point: "Bloodlines" is the weakest episode in the entire Supernatural series and there is really no reason for it to exist. However, as a backdoor pilot for the spin-off Supernatural: Bloodlines, it does provide an interesting introduction to a world that is far removed from that of the Winchesters. In this week's backdoor pilot, written by Andrew Dabb, a mysterious man with silver claws goes on a killing spree in a monster bar and accidentally kills Ennis Ross' fiance as he tries to escape.
When Sam and Dean encounter Ennis, they share information, save some shape-shifters, and help create a new hunter. Meanwhile, a forbidden relationship between shape-shifter David and werewolf Violet is revealed and David must overcome his sister in order to find his place in the family.
Supernatural: Bloodlines can be seen as a lighter version of Supernatural and should be appreciated as such, if possible.
As Dean says, "What is this, The Godfather with fangs?" The tone of "Bloodlines" tries to achieve this, but falls short. The episode feels like a confusing mix of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals thrown into the world of Sam and Dean, without any proper justification or development. The only saving grace is Ennis Ross, who has the most interesting story in this episode - until the end when a mysterious phone call from his "dead" father adds a bit of Arrow into the mix.
One element of this idea remains compelling: the world of Supernatural is vast and has an established mythology. While a monster bar fight in Chicago may not seem like the best approach to explore this world, it does introduce an interesting new hunter. While it is enjoyable to watch weighty battles between Sam and Dean, the series has gradually removed much of the human element along the way.
It's nice to see it return in some form, even if a relationship between a shape-shifter and a werewolf that could potentially start a war might be a bit too True Blood for this CW attempt.
